Cat6 vs Cat6A Cable: Which One Do You Actually Need?
If you've ever stood in front of a cable roll shelf and wondered whether to grab Cat6 or Cat6A, you're not alone. It's one of the most common questions we get. The short answer: it depends on how far you're running and what speed you need. The long answer is what this guide is for. Both cables use the same RJ45 connector. Both will work in your patch panel. But the difference in what they can actually deliver — at full distance — is significant. Getting this wrong means callbacks. What's the Actual Difference? Cat6 and Cat6A are both ethernet cables with four twisted copper pairs inside. The "A" in Cat6A stands for Augmented — it's the next generation of the same standard, built to handle higher speeds over longer distances. If you're running short patch leads within a comms room, wiring up a small office where runs are under 50m, or working on a residential install where gigabit is more than enough — Cat6 does the job without overspending. Residential installs — streaming, gaming, home offices Short office runs under 50m where 1Gbps is sufficient Budget-sensitive jobs where 10G isn't a requirement Patch leads and short inter-rack connections When You Should Use Cat6A Cat6A is the professional standard for a reason. If there's any chance the client upgrades to 10G networking in the next five years — and most commercial clients will — Cat6A is the only cable worth putting in the wall. You can't easily re-pull cable after the fit-out is done. Rule of thumb: If the run is over 55m, it's going underground, or it's a commercial job — spec Cat6A. The extra cost per metre is nothing compared to a callback. What AS/CA S008 Actually Is AS/CA S008 is the Australian standard for customer cabling — every metre of cable on the customer's side of the network boundary. Think of the boundary as the demarcation point where the carrier's network ends and the building's structured cabling begins. Everything from that point inward — risers, horizontal runs, patch leads, outlets — falls under S008.
